Gale Sampson Charitable Fund and Opera Ebony, this magnificent work is
written by esteemed American composer, Leo Edwards. The musical explores
the life and accomplishments of one of America's greatest heros - Harriet
Tubman.
Harriet Tubman
changed the lives of countless individuals, empowering them with the
promise of freedom and showing them how to achieve it. She served as a nurse, scout, and spy for
the Union Army. As conductor of the
Underground Railroad, she was hailed as the "Moses" of her
people. She made 19 trips over an eleven-year period, personally leading
over 300 people from slavery. This wonderful new musical work not only
celebrates her memory, but also her bravery in pursuing liberty, justice
and well being for all Americans.
The
Meetin' -
Commissioned by the Jerome Foundation and Opera Ebony, The Meetin' is a musical theater work in one
act, based on the short play, Mother & Child by renowned
American poet and author, Langston Hughes. Composed by Pamela
Baskin-Watson, this 'women's gathering' is a dramatic portrayal of rural
life in a small mid-western community. Scored for a chamber ensemble and eight
female principal singers, it is filled with great humor and drama and provides
a unique look into the philosophy and traditions of an African-American
community during the 1950's.
